WEST CHESTER, Pa. - No. 16 West Chester University shut out visting Chestnut Hill, 2-0, on a blistering hot Thursday afternoon in the season opener for both squads. Sarah Oswald scored both goals with assists coming from Devon Swaim.
It was a hot day for soccer, but West Chester played through the heat wave and came out with a win. Oswald scored her first goal 51 minutes into the match, tucking the ball underneath a charging goalkeeper Jessica Veazey from eight yards out. The Golden Rams played very well in their opening match.
Though Chestnut Hill came out in a tight defense, it was not enough to keep the Rams from scoring three minutes apart in the second half. In the 54th-minute, Swaim assisted Oswald with her second goal. Oswald bent in a cross from the left sideline for her 43rd career goal.
Veazey, made eight saves against the Rams. West Chester performed well offensively, taking 20 shots as opposed to Chestnut Hill’s one.
Golden Rams’ freshman goalkeeper, Leeny Tarnowski, made her first career appearance, recording one save in the second half against Chestnut Hill’s Kaelen Pizarro. West Chester’s defense played hard, keeping the Griffins away from its rookie keeper most of the afternoon.
West Chester will be back in action, on the South Campus Fields, Saturday at 12 p.m. against West Virginia Wesleyan.
