MANSFIELD, Pa. – West Chester University put five players in double figures, highlighted by Shannon Givens’ 16 points to lead visiting West Chester to an 86-74 victory over host Mansfield in the PSAC men’s basketball opener for both schools Wednesday evening inside Decker Gym.
West Chester (10-3, 1-0 PSAC East) opened its Eastern Division slate with a big road win over the defending divisional champions, who were slated to finish second in the East in the preseason coaches’ poll. Mansfield (8-5, 0-1) dropped its second straight and four of its last six.
The win marked West Chester's first triumph on the road this season in four tries.
The Golden Rams, who led by just four at halftime following a layup from Carl Johnson in the waning seconds, went on a 23-7 run out of the gates in the second half to crack open a tight contest and lead by 17. West Chester’s advantage would eventually extend to 19.
Eli Daniel scored 13 points for the Rams while Lance McDowell and Harley Williamson each posted 12 points. Khalif Foster added 11 points off the bench. Givens added five assists and seven rebounds to his 16 points.
West Chester returns to Hollinger Field House Saturday afternoon for its league home opener against East Stroudsburg at 3 p.m.
