SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – West Chester University’s men’s swimming squad sent a strong message one of its top competitors in the PSAC Friday night with a convincing 163.5-98.5 win over host Shippensburg at Donald Miller Pool in the season opener for both programs.
West Chester captured 9 of the 14 events and occupied each of the top three spots in two races to show the rest of the conference what it will take if they want to end the Golden Rams’ 13-year run at the championships in February.
Among the impressive performances was a double-win from freshman Jared Haley and a triple-win performance from sophomore Ryan Stahley. Haley captured the 1000-yard freestyle in 9 minutes, 56.6 seconds and the 500 free in 4:52.19. Stahley was a winner in the 50 free (21.53), 100 free (48.77) and the 50 butterfly (24.03).
Following Haley to the finish line in the 1000 free was Tommy Rhoads (10:20.45) and Tyler Adams (10:24.98), respectively, as West Chester claimed the top three positions in that race. Stahley was followed by Rhoads (49.39) and Alex Corbett (49.75) in the 100 free. Rhoads copped three runner-up performances, plus anchoring the 200 free relay team that won first place, for a very productive night.
Phil Letcavage won the 200 free in a time of 1:45.54 while touching out second in the 500 free to Haley (4:56.59) and third in the 100 back (55.78).
Calvin Starosta won the 100 back in front of Letcavage with a time of 54.28. Adam Keup won the 200 Individual Medley in 2:03.66.
West Chester returns home next Friday night when Division I Lehigh come calling to Graham Natatorium on South Campus.
