CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Freshman Cara Deola scored both of West Chester University’s goals as the fifth-seeded Golden Rams downed fourth-seeded Edinboro University, 2-0, in the first round of the NCAA Division II Women’s Soccer Tournament at the New Stadium Complex on the campus of California (Pa.).
West Chester (13-3-4) advances to the second round to take on host California (Pa.) at 12 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Deola broke a scoreless tie in the 76th minute when she scored off a rebound of a header on a shot by Dana Hunt. Deola then notched her fifth of the season 11 minutes later, putting the game away for good.
“(Deola) is getting more confident with every game we play,” WCU head coach Betty Ann Kempf Townsley said. “To be able to score two goals in the first round was fantastic.”
Paige Maloney, who picked up an assist on Deola’s second tally was singled out as a player, who was particularly productive in the win. Kempf Townsley said she was very composed on the second goal from Deola.
Though entering as the lowest seed in the three-team pod, West Chester University is making its ninth straight NCAA appearance and that showed Friday on the field.
“The leaders on this team, who have been here before, have prepared those younger players,” Kempf Townsley commented. “They know how special it is to play in the NCAAs.
“Everyone played great today. We knocked the ball around very well.”
Freshman goalkeeper Shannon Fedyk was credited with six saves in the shutout win.
