BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – West Chester earned its first PSAC East doubleheader sweep of the season with a pair of wins on the road at Bloomsburg on an ice cold Monday afternoon. The Rams won game one, 7-5, and took the nightcap, 3-2.
West Chester (10-11, 4-4 PSAC East) got back to .500 in the league with the sweep over Bloomsburg (9-11, 2-6).
Joe Wendle went 2-for-4 with a three-run homer during a five-run fifth that highlighted West Chester’s 7-5 win in game one. Jack Provine walked with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh of game two to break a 2-2 tie and force in the game-winning run.
Anthony Clemens (2-1) picked up the win in game two, throwing 4 2/3 innings of hitless relief. Clemens and starter Conor Kerins combined on a one-hitter, allowing just a RBI double to Brad Smith – the second batter of the game – in the win. Clemens struck out six and walked two. Kerins allowed both Bloomsburg runs, only one of them earned, walked one and struck out two.
Joe Gunkel (3-1) started and pitched into the seventh inning, surrendering one earned run on seven hits, walking one and striking out four. He also hit three batters. Brent Roehrich (1) came on to record the save, striking out Jarrod Kramer with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the seventh.
West Chester takes on University of Sciences on Tuesday at Serpico Stadium at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Golden Rams welcome Philadelphia University to Serpico Stadium for the first round of the Bill Giles Classic.
