WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester University used a seven-run third inning to erase an early 2-0 deficit, and then hung on to defeat visiting University of Sciences, 9-7, in a non-league baseball game at Serpico Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
West Chester (11-11) evened its record on the season and have now won five of its last six as the Rams head into Wednesday’s Bill Giles Classic first round match against Philadelphia University at Serpico Stadium.
Joe Wendle went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBI. Mike Raimo and Jack Provine each collected a pair of hits as well in leading the Rams’ 10-hit attack. Seven of West Chester’s nine hitters registered at least one hit and one RBI.
John Barr (1-1) earned the win on the mound. He started the contest and lasted six innings, giving up two runs, one of them earned, on four hits. He walked two and struck out four. Zak Wetzel came on in the seventh and surrendered three runs, recording just one out, before Jordan Lehman relieved Wetzel.
The Sciences scored three in the seventh and two more in the eighth to make a game of it, before Lehman settled down and finished out the contest.
Joe Roselli (0-3) lasted just 3.1 innings, yielding eight runs on eight hits. Nick Kuklane came on in relief with one out in the fourth and limited the Golden Rams to just two hits and one run the rest of the way.
West Chester competes for an opportunity to play at Citizens Bank Park Wednesday when the Golden Rams take on Philadelphia University at 3 p.m. The winner of that tilt advances to the Bill Giles Championship Game on April 12 at Citizens Bank Park.
