Baseball Advances To Bill Giles Championship With Dominant Win

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester banged out 22 runs on 20 hits, including three home runs, en route to a 22-7 victory over visiting Philadelphia University in the first round of the Bill Giles Classic on an overcast and chilly day at Serpico Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

West Chester (12-11) advances to the championship game of the Bill Giles Classic on April 12 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The Golden Rams have won the four-team Division II tournament each of the past three years. Philadelphia University (2-14) saw its losing streak extend to three games.

West Chester scored 20 of its 22 runs with two outs, putting up three runs in the fifth, nine in the sixth, three in the seventh and five more in the eighth. Kristian von Kiel hit a three-run homer in the sixth while Provine did the same in the eighth, followed by a solo shot from Matt Baer.

Provine finished the day 2-for-3 with six RBI. Twice, he walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. Joe Wendle went 2-for-3 with five RBI and three runs scored, including a bases loaded triple in the fifth inning that broke open a 2-1 ballgame.

Mike Raimo went 4-for-5 with three runs scored from his leadoff position in the order. Baer was 4-for-6 with five RBI. Dylan Zigman went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

The beneficiary of West Chester’s offensive onslaught was Dylan Porter, who put in another outstanding mid-week performances. Porter (2-2) evened his record with 7.1 innings of three-hit ball. He allowed three runs, only two of them earned, and struck out seven batters.

West Chester travels to Shippensburg on Friday for a PSAC East doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
