Shippensburg Sweeps Baseball Doubleheader From Rams

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – West Chester University dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader at Shippensburg on a cold and overcast Friday afternoon. The Golden Rams fell, 8-4, in the first game and 6-5 in the nightcap.

West Chester (12-13, 4-6 PSAC East) tied things up at 5-5 in the top of the seventh of game two, but Shippensburg (13-16, 6-4) scored the game-winning run in the bottom half of the inning with one out.

Joe Wendle reached on a fielding error by the second baseman in the top of the seventh and eventually came around to score on a one-out single to right by Reid Pulford. However, Ben Miller doubled with one out in the bottom half of the seventh and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Tyler Uphouse singled home Miller with the game-winning run to complete the sweep.

Mike Raimo tied game two at 3-all with a two-run single in the fourth. Shippensburg put up two runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to restore the two-run lead.

Brandon Wolfe went 2-for-3 with a RBI while Dylan Zigman was 2-for-2 with a run knocked in.

Anthony Clemens (2-2) went the distance on the mound. He yield six runs, four of them earned, on nine hits. He walked three and struck out eight. Kody Kibler pitched the seventh for the Raiders to pick up the win.

Matt Baer went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the opener. However, starter Matt Zielinski’s first-inning struggles continued as he allowed six of Shippensburg’s eight runs in the opening frame.

West Chester battled back to make it 6-4 at the end of two. Baer hit a bases loaded single that drove in two during a three-run second. But, the Raiders got two insurance runs in the fourth to get the lead back to four.

Zielinski’s final numbers were eight runs on nine hits in four innings of work. He struck out three and walked two. John Barr finished up with two scoreless innings on two hits. Tom Bush (5-0) went the distance for the win for the Raiders.

West Chester and Shippensburg will be at it again on Saturday in a doubleheader at Serpico Stadium beginning at 1 p.m.
