Diamondmen Claim Bill Giles Championship With 3-0 Shutout

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.
- Five pitchers combined on a five-hit shutout as West Chester University blanked No. 23 Wilmington University, 3-0, in the championship game of the 11th Annual Bill Giles Classic at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia Wednesday.

West Chester (16-17) won its fourth straight Bill Giles championship and eighth overall while avenging a loss to Wilmington (26-4) in the process. The Golden Rams remained unbeaten at Citizens Bank Park (6-0) with the win.

John Barr (2-1) picked up the win on the mound for West Chester. Joe Gunkel (2) recorded his second save, pitching the eighth and ninth innings. Josh Heyne double and scored in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jack Provine, and West Chester successfully converted a pair of sacrifice bunt to score the other run in the ballgame.

The Rams were held to five hits in between rain drops and falling temperatures in the City of Brotherly Love. However, that was all they would need for the win.

West Chester will be back in action at home on Friday when the Golden Rams host Mansfield University in a PSAC East doubleheader at Serpico Stadium.
