WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester University swept a doubleheader from visiting Mansfield to put itself right back into the middle of the playoff hunt on a sunny, but windy, Friday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
West Chester (18-17, 8-10 PSAC East) notched its first doubleheader sweep of the season, and it could not have come at a better time, much to the dismay of Mansfield (16-11, 5-7).
Trailing 7-2 early on, the Golden Rams put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and another deuce in the fourth to draw within one (7-6). That is when West Chester exploded for six runs in the fifth to salt away game one. That six-run fifth chased starter Eric Rosenberger (5-1), who suffered his first loss of the season on the hill.
The first six batters each reached and would eventually score during the fateful frame. Josh Heyne hit a two-run single, followed by a two-run double from Dylan Zigman to highlight the inning. Reid Pulford and Jack Provine each added RBI singles to round out the stanza.
Provine finished game one 3-for-4 with three RBI. Chris Pula also drove home three runs in the opener. Brandon Wolfe was 2-for-2 with a RBI and two runs scored.
Jordan Lehman (3-4) pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief to pick up the win. He allowed two runs on eight hits, walked a pair and struck out five. Conor Kerins started and lasted 1 2/3 innings. He yielded five runs, just one of them earned, on two hits. He walked three and struck out two.
Dylan Porter (4-2) was masterful in the nightcap, winning the pitcher’s duel with Mansfield’s Joe Candelmo (4-3). Both pitchers completed the game. Porter surrendered one run on five hits. He walked three and struck out six. Candelmo scattered eight hits, giving up two runs and striking out four without walking a batter.
Pulford was 2-for-3 in the second game while Wolfe drove in a pair of runs and went 1-for-2 at the plate.
West Chester and Mansfield will attempt to get the remaining two games of their four-game weekend series in Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
