KUTZTOWN, Pa. – West Chester’s seventh-inning rally in game one fell short, and Kutztown rode the strength of a four-run fourth to the doubleheader sweep Friday afternoon. The Bears took game one, 3-2, while winning game two, 6-1.
West Chester (18-19, 8-12 PSAC East) swapped places with Kutztown (19-14, 9-9) in the league standings and fell into fifth place in the Eastern Division.
Joe Wendle and Brandon Wolfe each led off the seventh inning of game one with a single. Wendle moved over to third on Wolfe’s base hit and then scored on a single by Chris Pula. However, Matt Baer hit into a doubleplay, that moved pinch runner Rob Spekhardt over to third. Reid Pulford reached on an error by the third baseman and advanced to second. However, he was thrown out at third trying to stretch it to end the game.
Conor Kerins and Jordan Lehman each threw three innings in the game one loss. Kerins (0-2) allowed three runs, only one of them earned, on three hits. He walked two and struck out three. Lehman pitched three shutout innings, surrendering three hits. He walked a pair and struck out a pair.
In the nightcap, Kutztown plated four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 advantage en route to the sweep. West Chester scored once in the fifth, but could not muster any more.
Wendle and Pula were each 2-for-3. Pula registered West Chester’s only RBI in game two.
