BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Bloomsburg captured a win at fourth singles for the fifth and deciding win in the PSAC consolation match of the 2011 postseason tournament Friday afternoon.
West Chester (15-10) ends its most successful campaign in quite some time with a fourth-place finish in the PSACs overall. Bloomsburg took third place as a result of its 5-3 victory.
The match came down to second, third and fourth singles with Bloomsburg holding a slim 4-2 advantage. Luisi Souto pulled out a 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 come-from-behind win at second singles to draw West Chester within one. Ali Fetter took the first set of her match at third singles, 7-5, but fell in the second set, 6-3. With Fetter up 5-1 in the third set and hold a 40-love lead in the deciding game, the fourth singles match ended in defeat for the Golden Rams.
“They left everything out on the court today,” WCU head coach Tina Tharp said. “That is all I can ask of them. “
Kara Shumock was a 7-5, 6-3 winner at sixth singles, which briefly tied the match at 2-2. Bloomsburg captured first and second doubles to open up a 2-0 lead in the match early. However, Shumock and Nicole Paller responded with an 8-3 win at third doubles.
Senior Claire Afrassiabian concludes her college tennis career with an overall record of 44-15. She set a school record her junior year with a perfect 16-0 mark. It marked the most wins by a women’s tennis player in a single season. She authored a 13-5 record this season, including 10-2 at fourth singles, where she spent most of the season.
