WEST CHESTER, Pa. – East Stroudsburg pounded out 27 hits and rode the arms of its top two starters to a PSAC East doubleheader sweep over host West Chester on an overcast and comfortable Saturday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
West Chester (14-16, 5-9 PSAC East) managed just eight hits off East Stroudsburg (19-6, 5-3) and its two aces. The Golden Rams went down, 7-2, in the opener and dropped the nightcap, 6-2.
Joe Wendle broke up Jeremy Gigliotti’s (4-1) perfect game in game one with a two-out single to right in the bottom of the fourth inning. Chris Pula doubled off the wall in left field in the seventh, scoring West Chester’s second run of the ball game. Wendle was 1-for-2 with a run scored against Gigliotti in a battle of pro prospects.
Joe Gunkel (3-2) threw a complete-game for the Golden Rams. He allowed two runs in the first inning on four hits. But, he didn’t allow another hit until the fifth inning, facing just one over the minimum during that stretch. However, Brian Ernst hit a three-run homer in the fifth, all of the runs that scored were unearned, to put the game out of reach. Ernst finished game one 3-for-4 with five RBI for the Warriors.
Mike Raimo went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored in game two. He tripled in Dylan Zigman in the fifth for one of West Chester’s two runs that inning. Wendle later would knock in Raimo with a single through the right side.
Matt Zielinski (1-3) suffered the loss on the hill in game two for the Rams. He lasted four innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits. He worked his way out of trouble in the first three innings, surrendering just two runs in the second inning, while East Stroudsburg stranded nine base runners. The Warriors left 16 runners on base in all in the second game. Dylan Porter finished up and allowed three runs on six hits in three innings of work.
West Chester and East Stroudsburg will finish up their four-game weekend series on Sunday in East Stroudsburg with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on tap. The Golden Rams will then prepare for what has become an annual visit to Citizens Bank Park for the Bill Giles Championship game on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
