MANSFIELD, Pa. – West Chester scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to muster a split of its season-ending PSAC East doubleheader at Mansfield on Sunday. But, the Golden Rams were eliminated from postseason contention with a 4-3 loss in the opener. They rebounded for a come-from-behind 8-7 win in the nightcap.
West Chester (22-21, 10-14 PSAC East) will not partake in the PSAC postseason tournament for the first time since 2004 and will miss the playoffs altogether for the first time since 2003. Mansfield (21-16, 10-12) hosts East Stroudsburg on Monday with an opportunity to wrap up a postseason bid.
Brandon Wolfe hit a bases-loaded, two-run single up the middle in the top of the seventh to drive home the go-ahead run. Wolfe put a fitting stamp on the end of his college career with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and three RBI. Reid Pulford grounded into a double play, scoring Joe Wendle with the game-winner.
John Barr (4-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing the final three innings and giving up one run on two hits and walking two. Anthony Clemens started and lasted 3 2/3 innings in his final college game. He allowed four runs, three of them earned, on three hits. He walked seven and struck out three. Mansfield’s Joel Worthington (4-3) suffered the loss in relief.
Wendle finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Mike Raimo had a pair of hits and a pair of runs scored. He led off the top of the seventh with a double to spark the winning rally.
In the opener, Mansfield scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 2-all tie. West Chester responded with a single run in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout from Wendle. However, that was as close as the Golden Rams would get.
Matt Zielinski (1-4) went the distance in his final college start. He allowed four runs, two of them earned, on six hits. He walked three and struck out four. Mansfield’s Joe Candelmo (6-4) got the win with a complete-game, five-hitter.
The win in the second game assured West Chester of a winning season for the 10th straight year.
