WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Michele Schrift scored two goals and Kelsi Lykens had a goal and two assists as host West Chester University held onto the Eleanor Snell Cup for the second year in a row with a 7-1 victory over visiting Ursinus Sunday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field.
West Chester (13-2) evened the Snell Cup series with Division III Ursinus (7-6) at 15-15-4. The Golden Rams now lead the overall series with the Bears, 29-25-12. The two regional rivals have been playing field hockey since 1939.
Ursinus' Rachel Pandl put the visitors on the board first in the 11th minute when she knocked in a rebound of her own shot to give the Bears a short-lived lead. West Chester scored 97 seconds later and then rattled off seven unanswered goals to walk away with the win. Schrift got the rally going in the 13th minute with an unassisted tally.
Megan Callanan followed nine minutes later, and Stef Pirri five minutes after that as the Rams opened up a 3-1 advantage quickly. Lykens scored in the 31st minute, and Schrift added her second of the game and 16th of the season just before halftime to make it a 5-1 game heading into the break.
Carley Buckwalter and Nancy Stehman added goals in the second half to make sure Ursinus would not have a comeback.
Kristin Arnold (13-2) made three saves in the first half to earn the win. Gabby Panasiewicz relieved her after halftime, but did not have to make a save. Danielle DeSpirito registered 11 saves for Ursinus in 70 minutes of action.
West Chester's seven goals were the most by a Golden Rams team against Ursinus in the all-time series. It also tied Ursinus' seven-goal effort in a 7-2 win back in 1952 for most by either side in the series.
These two schools have met on the field hockey pitch every season dating back to 1965. Three of West Chester's four AIAW national championships in the 1970s came at the expense of Ursinus.
West Chester hosts East Stroudsburg Wednesday afternoon at Vonnie Gros Field in its regular-season home finale. The Rams then finish up its regular-season slate at Kutztown next Saturday.
