EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg's Marissa Spitler and Courtney Keller were the goal scorers as East Stroudsburg University upset No. 6-ranked West Chester, 2-1, in PSAC women's soccer on Tuesday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Spitler scored her first goal of the season on a free kick in the sixth minute, and Keller had her fourth goal of the year on an assist from Sammi Jo Huges in the 64th minute as the Warriors (7-3-4, 6-2-3), ranked sixth in this week's NSCAA Atlantic Region poll, earned their first win over West Chester since 2002.
Marie D'Angelo scored in the 36th minute for the Golden Rams (11-2-1, 8-2-1), who were dealt just their seventh loss in PSAC play since 2005. West Chester has won four of the last six PSAC championships, made nine straight trips to the NCAA Tournament since 2003 and is now 80-7-12 in conference action in the last eight seasons.
WCU, coming off its first loss of the season (3-2 at Lock Haven) on Saturday, was 15-0-2 against ESU since the Warriors' last win, 2-0 in 2002.
ESU goalkeeper Brittain Wagner made five saves in goal for the Warriors, including two in the final three minutes to keep her team in front. West Chester had advantages of 18-15 in shots and 7-4 in corner kicks. The shots were even, 7-7, in the second half.
West Chester hosts Bloomsburg on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. on Senior Day. It is also Homecoming Weekend.
