WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Michele Schrift scored a pair of first-half goals to propel second-ranked West Chester University to a 5-0 victory over No. 10 East Stroudsburg in a PSAC East field hockey contest at Vonnie Gros Field Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, West Chester (14-2, 8-1 PSAC East) captures at least a share of the PSAC Eastern Division regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming PSAC Tournament next weekend. With the No. 1 seed, the Golden Rams earn a bye in the quarterfinal round of the tournament and will host the semifinal round and the championship game next Friday and Saturday at Vonnie Gros Field.
Tickets to the PSAC Tournament are $7 for adults and $2 for students. Students from PSAC member institutions with valid school ID are admitted free. PSAC passes will be honored as well.
There will be no complimentary tickets available. Times of the two semifinal round games on Friday, as well as the championship game on Saturday, will be determined at a later date.
Schrift got things started early with her team-leading 17th goal of the season in the fifth minute. Kayla Gluchowski doubled the hosts’ lead five minutes later with her 10th tally of the year when she tipped a shot from Kelsi Lykens into the net while framing the cage on the right post. Schrift would add her 18th of the season in the 29th minute, giving the Golden Rams a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Lykens blasted her 12th goal of the year past ESU goalkeeper Sarah Dobrosky in the 38th minute while Nancy Stehman scored her fourth of the season in the 69th minute during a mad scramble in front of the cage.
Kristin Arnold (14-2) made nine saves in the cage for West Chester while Dobrosky (4-8) was credited with 14 stops in the loss.
West Chester concludes its regular-season slate on Saturday at Kutztown in a 12 p.m. contest.
