WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Slippery Rock University scored a pair of goals 57 seconds apart in the first half and then made them stand up the rest of the 67 minutes of action en route to a 2-0 men’s soccer victory over host West Chester University on a wet and rainy Tuesday afternoon on South Campus.
West Chester (3-7-2, 2-2-1 PSAC) has now dropped five of its last six and falls behind Slippery Rock (6-2-5, 2-2-2) in the PSAC standings with the loss.
Chris Davis and Stephen Donnelly each scored for Slippery Rock in the 23rd and 24th minute of the first half to secure the win for the visitors.
Senior goalkeeper Garrett Bleiler (3-5-2) made four saves for the Golden Rams in the net. His counterpart, reigning PSAC athlete of the week, Clay Master made four saves as well.
The Golden Rams had their opportunities to score. Junior forward Conor Malarney put one in the back of the net in the second minute of the game. However, West Chester was whistled for being off sides on the play.
In the 25th minute of the game, shortly after The Rock had opened their two-goal lead, West Chester had a scoring opportunity thwarted when Slippery Rock defender Cameron Schenkel kicked a ball off the goal line and out of danger.
In the 73rd minute, Malarney appeared to have wrapped a corner kick around the inside post for a goal. However, Master punched the ball out ofharm’s way to preserve the shutout.
West Chester travels to Lock Haven on Saturday for another PSAC tilt against the Bald Eagles. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. for the men. The women’s game will follow at 2:30 p.m.
