WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Francis Ashe hit a jumper in the lane with 1.7 seconds left to lift visiting Chestnut Hill to a 62-61 victory over host West Chester University in the Golden Rams' season opener Wednesday evening inside Hollinger Field House.
Jon Breeden nailed a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to cap a 6-0 run in the final minute of play that erased a 60-55 deficit and put the Rams in the lead, 61-60.The Griffins' five-point lead equaled the largest advantage of the game for either side.
Ashe received an inbounds pass from mid-court with 9.6 seconds left and drove down the right sideline into the lane. His running jumper was on the mark, and a last-second desperation heave at the buzzer was no good.
Both sides struggled from the field in a tight contest from jump ball to the buzzer.
Corey Blake led West Chester in scoring with 10 points. He was the only Golden Rams player in double figures. Jaleel Mack added nine points off the bench. Carl Johnson, Tim Flecken and Ryan McKeaney each contributed eight points.
Mark DiRugeris and Alssene Saintilus each registered 13 points for the Griffins.
West Chester welcomes Shaw University to Hollinger Field House on Sunday evening at 6 p.m.
