NEWARK, Del. – West Chester scored 19 of the game’s final 29 points to pull out an 83-72 non-league men’s basketball victory over host Wilmington University on the road Tuesday evening.
Corey Blake scored 9 of his 16 points in the final four minutes of the game to help West Chester (1-2) stave off a Wilmington comeback bid and hand the Golden Rams their first win of the season. Blake scored 14 of those 16 points in the second half.
“He was supposed to be our go-to guy at the beginning of the year,” WCU head coach Damien Blair said afterwards. “He certainly came on strong at the end there. It feels good to get out of here with a win.”
The host Wildcats pulled to within a one-possession game, 64-62, with 4:15 left. However, Blake was too much to handle down the stretch, and Troy Hockaday (12 points) blocked a pair of shots in the final three minutes to fuel the defensive effort. Wilmington used a 20-4 run over a seven-minute span midway through the second half to cut a 12-points deficit (52-40) to just one basket.
Jon Breeden finished with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists for the Golden Rams, who put five players in double figures. Carl Johnson and Jaleel Mack each scored 10 for the Rams.
West Chester is off for the Thanksgiving break. The Golden Rams will travel to University of the Sciences next Monday (Nov. 26) for another non-league tilt at 8 p.m. That game can be heard on the internet at www.WCHE1520.com.
