SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. –
Eric Frans (Saucon Valley) made a layup with 19 seconds left to put visiting West Chester on top, and then
Jon Breeden (Central Dauphin East) nailed a pair of free throws with two seconds left as the Golden Rams held on for a 56-53 win over host Slippery Rock Tuesday night inside Morrow Fieldhouse.
West Chester (5-3, 3-1 PSAC) has now won five of its last six while Slippery Rock (5-2, 3-1) suffered its first league defeat.
The Rock had one final attempt to tie the game when the ensuing inbound pass off of Breeden's second made free throw was intercepted near mid court by Breeden, but the Golden Rams' guard stepped out of bounds with 1.6 seconds on the clock while making the play. Slippery Rock threw that inbounds pass down into the corner. However, Darius Clark's shot at the buzzer hit off the front of the rim.
West Chester led for much of the contest. Slippery Rock rallied to tie the game at 34-all five minutes into the second half. However, the Rams went on a 14-5 run to open up a nine-point lead with just under eight to go. WCU was able to keep its lead at six over the next five minutes. But, The Rock made their final push with under two minutes left and took a 53-52 lead with a 6-0 spurt. That is when Frans made his layup in the final minute to put the visitors back on top for good.
Breeden finished with a team-high 13 points while Corey Blake netted 10 and Jaleel Mack had eight. Frans scored six points for the Golden Rams as well.
West Chester continues its western road swing on Wednesday with a 7:30 tip-off at Edinboro.
