WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Harley Williamson led six players in double figures with 14 points as the balanced scoring by West Chester University helped lead the Rams past visiting Mansfield, 84-65, in a PSAC East men’s basketball game Saturday afternoon inside Hollinger Field House.
West Chester (4-2, 2-1 PSAC) bounced back from its loss to Indiana (Pa.) last weekend with the complete team performance Saturday. Mansfield (1-4, 0-3) is still in search of its first win of the season in conference play.
West Chester got off to a good start in the first half, building a 19-point lead (44-25) by halftime. Sophomore Eric Frans led the way with all 10 of his points in the game before the break. He also blocked a shot and recorded a steal.
Carl Johnson added 11 points in support of Frans’s 10. But the real reason that West Chester was able to jump out to a big lead was the play at the defensive end of the floor. The Golden Rams held Mansfield to 22 percent shooting from the field, and 11 percent from behind the arc.
The Rams also held Mansfield’s leading scorer, Joe Bell (averaging 20 ppg), to just four first-half points with all of those coming from the free throw line. Bell hit his first field goal of the game with 15 minutes left in the second half.
In the first part of the second half, West Chester continued take control. West Chester had a very balanced scoring attack. Troy Hockaday posted 13 points and Johnson had 11, respectively.
West Chester’s defense held Mansfield to 33 percent shooting for the game, and 17 percent from beyond the arc. It was an all around good performance by the Rams.
West Chester will travel to Slippery Rock on Dec. 18, for a 7:30 p.m. showdown. Mansfield travels to California (Pa.) next.
