MANSFIELD, Pa. – Josh Heyne hit two home runs in game two and Reid Pulford hit a grand slam and drove in five runs in the opener as West Chester swept a PSAC East doubleheader from Mansfield for the second time in as many days Sunday afternoon.
West Chester (13-1, 4-0 PSAC East) came from behind in both contests in registering double-digits in runs scored against Mansfield (6-15, 0-4) for the third consecutive game. The Golden Rams took game one, 15-6, while winning game two, 10-6.
Heyne’s first home run in the nightcap ignited a seven-run rally in the top of the third that enabled the visitors to erase a 5-0 deficit. That solo shot led off the inning. Jack Provine would later double in a run, and Joe Wendle followed up that two-bagger with a three-run shot to dead center field. Jordan Wlodarczyk doubled in a run, and Heyne closed out the scoring with his second RBI of the frame on a fielder’s choice.
Mansfield got a run in its half of the third to draw within one (7-6). However, Matt Baer hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and Heyne smashed a two-run shot in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Dave Stieg (2-0) picked up the win in relief, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings and scattering three hits. He walked two and struck out four.
Wendle’s homer in the seven-run third was his team-leading sixth of the season. Dylan Porter started the game on the mound for the Golden Rams. He lasted 2.1 innings, surrendering six runs on five hits. Only two of those runs were earned. He walked two and struck out two.
Wlodarczyk went 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Heyne was 2-for-4 with four RBI. Wendle was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
West Chester scored four runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth of game one to jump out in front 5-1. However, the hosts responded with a five-spot in their half of the fourth to take a brief 6-5 lead.
Wendle opened the Rams’ top of the fifth with a towering shot to right that knotted the game. Then, Pulford hit a grand that put WCU on top for good, 10-6. Four more runs in the sixth stretched the advantage to an insurmountable 14-6. The Golden Rams added one more in the seventh.
West Chester rattled four different Mansfield pitchers for 15 runs on 16 hits. Both Wendle and Pulford were 3-for-4. Mike Raimo, Chris Pula and Justin Lamborn each recorded a pair of RBI.
Jordan Lehman (1-1) registered the win in relief of starter Conor Kerins. He tossed 3.1 scoreless relief innings, allowing three hits, walking one while striking out five. Kerins lasted 3.2 innings, yielding six runs on four hits, walking four and striking out four.
West Chester hosts College of Saint Rose (N.Y.) on Tuesday at Serpico Stadium for a non-league doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
