PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – West Chester University captured two of the three doubles competitions and then took Nos. 3 thru 6 in the singles to come away with a 6-3 non-league women’s tennis victory on the road Thursday afternoon.
West Chester (8-8) looked sharp in its tune-up for PSAC East rival Millersville on Saturday. The Golden Rams need a win over the Marauders to clinch a postseason berth for the third consecutive season. West Chester has two league matches left. WCU will host Cheyney next Tuesday in the conference finale.
Brittany Counts and Ali Fetter were 8-6 winners at first doubles while Rebecca Thiel and Alex Santoro teamed up at third doubles for an 8-1 win that gave the visitors an advantage heading into singles play.
Though Counts and Fetter dropped their matches at first and second singles, West Chester rebounded with wins at the other four spots to secure the win. Host Holy Family had tied the match at 3-all after its pair of wins in singles.
Santoro won, 7-5, 6-0 at third singles, Nikki Paller won, 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles, Haley Wissinger won, 6-4, 6-1 at fifth singles while Thiel was a 6-2, 6-3 winner at sixth singles.
Wissinger’s win at fifth singles clinched the match.
West Chester travels to Millersville Saturday at 11 a.m.
