SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Shippensburg ended West Chester’s conference and school record 20-game winning streak with a doubleheader sweep of the PSAC baseball doubleheader at Fairchild Field Saturday afternoon.
West Chester (25-3, 10-2 PSAC East) suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season and dropped both ends of a doubleheader for the first time as well. Shippensburg (23-15, 9-7) earned a split of the four-game weekend series as a result of the sweep Saturday.
Jordan Wlodarczyk collected a hit in game one of the doubleheader to move his consecutive hit streak to 20 games. However, that string came to an end in the nightcap as a result of an 0-for-3 showing at the plate.
Dave Stieg (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season, but did not turn in a bad performance on the mound. He allowed just one earned run in a complete-game effort. The Golden Rams committed three errors behind him in the field. He scattered four hits over six innings of work while walking three and striking out two.
The first four batters in West Chester’s lineup went a combined 0-for-11 in the game one loss.
In the nightcap, Dylan Porter started on the hill, but lasted just 1.1 innings. Jordan Lehman (1-2) came on in relief and pitched 3.2 innings, before giving way to Kyle Weary in the sixth. The trio combined to yield seven runs, five earned, on nine hits.
The game was tied at 3-all after three innings. Chris Pula hit a two-run homer to left in the top of the first to stake the Rams to an early lead. He finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, knocking in West Chester’s third run of the game with a single in the third.
West Chester travels to Millersville next Friday for a doubleheader against the Marauders.
