WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Sophomore
Ashley Saylor (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) registered a career-high five points as host West Chester exploded for five goals in the second half en route to a 6-0 shutout over visiting Chestnut Hill in a non-league women’s soccer season opener for both squads Thursday afternoon.
Saylor finished off a nice centering pass four yards out along the goal mouth from
Cara Deola (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South) in the 61st minute to give the Golden Rams a 3-0 advantage. She then converted a penalty kick in the 71st minute for West Chester’s fifth tally of the afternoon. Saylor also picked up an assist on a goal by
Carly Yost (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) one minute after her first goal of the game. In all, Saylor had a hand in three straight markers within a 10-minute stretch of the second half that pushed a two-goal advantage to five.
Diana Rowan (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) and
Melissa McKeary (River Vale, N.J./Pascack) staked West Chester to a 2-0 lead. Rowan found the far upper right-hand corner of the goal off a corner kick in the 17th minute from just about the elbow of the penalty area to draw first blood.
Cora Littlejohns (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) finished out the scoring in the79th minute.
West Chester outshot Chestnut Hill by a 38-2 margin. Rams goalkeeper
Shannon Fedyk (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) was called upon to make just one save.
Wes Chester returns home on Saturday for another non-league matchup against Philadelphia University at 12 p.m.
