Box Score Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Dan Venuto's blast into the left side of the net off a free kick from 28 yards out in the 79th minute capped West Chester's 3-1 PSAC men's soccer victory over visiting California (Pa.) Saturday afternoon.

West Chester (2-2-2, 1-0-1 PSAC) remains unbeaten in its last four contests and picked up three much-needed points in the league standings.

Tommy Ryan and Alex Katz each tallied goals in the first half, giving the hosts a 2-0 halftime lead. However, Cal's Chris Moehler was taken down in the area two minutes into the second half, and he converted the penalty kick to shave the lead in half.

Ryan’s goal in the 28th minute was his second of the season while Katz deposited his first career goal with his marker in the 34th minute.

From there, senior goalkeeper Garrett Bleiler held Cal off the scoreboard, making seven saves in the tilt. Bleiler did not allow a goal on a field play all day. Cal converted its penalty kick for the only tally of the afternoon.

The win was the first for West Chester over a PSAC opponent since Oct. 23, 2010 against Gannon University in a game played at Edinboro – a span of 11 games in which West Chester went 0-6-5 against conference competition. It was the Golden Rams’ first win over Cal since Sept. 8, 2007, ending a personal four-game non-winning streak against the Vulcans (0-3-1).

West Chester is at Wilmington (Del.) on Tuesday for a non-league match at 1 p.m.
