WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Last-second wins were becoming the norm inside Hollinger Field House this winter.
Until … that is … Saturday evening.
PSAC East rival Millersville, vanquished West Chester’s late-game good fortunes as the visiting Marauders gutted out a 68-64 win in a battle for second place in the league standings.
West Chester (10-5, 8-3 PSAC) saw its five-game winning streak come to an end as Millersville (12-5, 8-3) moved into a tie for second place with the Golden Rams in the PSAC Eastern Division standings. The two long-time rivals – Saturday marked the 187th meeting in the all-time series – are two games back of East Stroudsburg in the Eastern Division standings.
The Golden Rams had an opportunity to tie the game or possibly take the lead with eight seconds left. Trailing, 66-64, Shannon Givens’ inbounds pass was intercepted by Millersville’s Xavier Mumford, and he threw down a dunk on a breakaway to salt the game away.
It was the first time Millersville escaped Hollinger Field House with a win since 2007 and marked just the third triumph by the Marauders inside the hallowed halls of Hollinger in their last 19 tries.
Saturday’s contest also marked the third time on West Chester’s current four-game homestand that the game was decided with less than 10 seconds remaining.
Millersville held a narrow 36-35 advantage at halftime and neither side led by more than five the rest of the night.
Hockaday scored a season-high 20 points, leading four players in double figures for the Golden Rams. Corey Blake and Shannon Givens each posted 13 points while Jaleel Mack netted 12.
Millersville’s Anthony Coleman and Elijah Obade each scored 15 points to lead the visitor’s in scoring. Brandon Brown added 11.
West Chester travels to Shippensburg Wednesday night at 8 p.m.
