CORTLAND, N.Y. - West Chester University dominated the uneven bars, and Kaley LaFleur picked up a win on the balance beam, as the visiting Golden Rams edged host SUNY Cortland, 186.225-185.225, in a non-league women's gymnastics meet Sunday afternoon in upstate New York.
West Chester (2-0) took second thru fifth place on the bars, which turned out to be enough for the one-point victory. Freshman Meghan Brannon scored a 9.55 to place second on the bars while teammates Karen Laskaris, Melissa Prisco and Paige Griffin fell into place right behind her. All four Golden Rams scored 9.225 or better on the bars.
"We had a great meet today," WCU head coach Barbara Cordova said. "But, I think our performance on the bars was really the thing that put us over the top. We really dominated that event."
Senior Kaley LaFleur picked up the only first-place ribbon for the Golden Rams. However, the depth West Chester showed was just too much for the Red Dragons of SUNY Cortland to deal with. LaFleur topped the balance beam with a score of 9.65. Freshman Lindsay Knapp was second with a 9.55.
Prisco was second on the vault with a score of 9.475.
West Chester opens its home slate on Jan. 26 with a dual meet against SUNY Brockport on South Campus inside Sturzebecker HSC. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
