SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Jon Breeden scored a season-high 18 points, and Jaleel Mack added a season-best 16, as visiting West Chester defeated host Shippensburg, 74-57, in a PSAC East men’s basketball contest Wednesday evening inside Heigis Fieldhouse.
West Chester (11-5, 9-3 PSAC) upped its personal winning streak to six games against Shippensburg (4-12, 2-10), bouncing back from a loss to Millersville on Saturday. The Golden Rams moved past the Marauders into second place in the PSAC Eastern Division standings as a result of Millersville’s loss to East Stroudsburg.
An 11-4 run midway through the second half helped West Chester open up a 10-point lead (55-45). The Golden Rams were able to extend that advantage with a 6-2 spurt that pushed the lead to 61-47. Mack sparked that run with a driving layup down the middle of the lane.
West Chester was able to build its 14-point lead with high-percentage shots in the middle of the lane combined with defensive stops at the other end of the floor. Shippensburg shot 50 percent in the first 20 minutes (11-for-22), but was unable to keep up that pace the rest of the way. Meanwhile, West Chester improved its shooting from the floor. The Golden Rams shot 59.3 percent (16-for-27) in the second half, finishing 29-for-69 (42 percent) for the game – a stark contrast to their 31 percent shooting (13-for-42) in the first half.
Shippensburg was led by Reggie Charles’ 15 points. Dylan Edgar added 11 points.
For West Chester, Breeden posted a double-double with 10 rebounds. Troy Hockaday had eight points, seven rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Harley Williamson contributed 13 points in the win.
West Chester travels to Bloomsburg on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip with the Huskies.
