NEW HAVEN, Conn. – West Chester University picked up right where it left off last season with a tri-meet sweep over PSAC rival Shippensburg and host Southern Connecticut State University Friday and Saturday inside Hutchinson Natatorium.
West Chester defeated Shippensburg, 265-87, while taking down So. Conn. State, 220-140.
Victor Polyakov broke the pool record in the 1,650-yard freestyle Saturday morning in the first event of the day. He touched the wall in 15 minutes, 54.04 seconds to win that event. He also claimed first in the 500 free, 200 free and the 400 individual medley. The Russian exchange student was also part of a pair of relays that took first place (400 free relay and 800 free relay). Polyakov’s pool record overshadowed sophomore Bradley Strathmeyer’s second place finish in a time of 16:26.04, which is impressive for the first meet of the year.
The Golden Rams had opened up a substantial lead on Friday night by winning eight events, including taking the top two spots in three races. West Chester claimed the first three spots off the 1-meter diving board. Christian Parker posted 309.9 points to win the event. Teammates Tim Cenjia was runner up with 262.72 while Zach Burns was third with a score of 233.85.
Following Polyakov to the wall in the 400 IM were teammates Connor Forlini (4:23.65) and Evan DeaKyne (4:25.44). Ryan Stahley and Tommy McMahon finished first and second in the 100 free. Stahley touched out in 48.6 to win the event while McMahon posted a time of 49.11.
On Saturday, Bogdan Grebenyuk, Michael Oliver and David McCormick took the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke. Grebenyuk registered a time of 2:12.39 and Oliver posted a 2:13.56 while McCormick touched the wall in 2:18.85.
Once again, West Chester was impressive off the diving board as Parker, Cenjia and Burns took the top three spots again in that order. Parker posted a winning score of 351.75, Cenjia a 257.47 and Burns a 227.71.
West Chester captured first place in six more events on Saturday while taking at least the top two spots in five of those six wins. Geoff Boody won the 50 free in 22.25 in his first college meet.
West Chester returns to the pool on Oct. 25 for its home opener – a tri-meet with Bloomsburg and Division I Lehigh.
