WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Senior midfielder Tommy Ryan's blast from the nearside elbow of the penalty area four minutes into overtime found the upper far corner of the net, delivering host West Chester a 1-0 victory over visiting Shippensburg at South Campus Field Tuesday afternoon.
West Chester (4-3-2, 4-1-1 PSAC) picks up three much-needed points in the league standings to keep pace with the leaders at the top of the division while Shippensburg (4-5-1, 1-3-1) dropped its third one-goal verdict of the year.
Roberto Silva played the ball out to Ryan off a corner kick, and Ryan hammered home a shot that Shippensburg goalkeeper Clay Sale could do nothing about, sending the West Chester bench spilling out onto the new turf in euphoric celebration. It was Ryan's second goal of the year for the Golden Rams.
The game would not have made it to the 94th minute of play had it not been for the heroics of Cameron Scott. He headed a shot from Shippensburg's Derrick Roy off the goal line and away from danger in regulation that was ear-marked for just underneath the crossbar. The team save kept the game at a scoreless tie for the time being.
Ryan Shultz (4-3-1) made six saves in the win. He made a diving snare of a Shippensburg shot in the second half that seemed like a sure-thing to keep the game knotted at 0-0. Sale (4-5-1) made nine saves for the Raiders.
West Chester hosts non-league foe Goldey-Beacom on Thursday at 3 p.m., before heading to Millersville on Saturday for another pivotal PSAC matchup.
