PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Cory Blake scored 17 points and added 11 rebounds to lead West Chest University to its first victory of the season, 71-61 over host Chestnut Hill College on Wednesday night at Sorgenti Arena.
Shannon Givens hit a three to open the scoring, and scored 10 points in the first half as West Chester (1-1), who never trailed in the game, led 36-28 at the break. Taylor Trevisan had 25 for Chestnut Hill (1-2) who cut the lead to two in the second half, but could not find the bucket to tie or go ahead.
Eric Frans recorded 11 rebounds and nine points, to help West Chester to a 53-33 edge on the boards. Frans grabbed six offensive rebounds and Blake had four, as the Golden Rams held a 24-8 edge off the offensive glass.
The Golden Rams shot 22-28 from the line, with Blake making all 11 of his attempts, compared to just 16-30 for the Griffins.
The game started with a frantic pace and saw the Golden Rams lead by 10 late in the half,
Rasheed Wilkens scored all six of his points including a basket with 19 ticks left to provide the half-time margin.
Chestnut Hill was able to get the lead down to two, but Blake put home an offensive rebound, and was fouled to give the Golden Rams a five point cushion at 48-43 with 11:05 to play.
Eddie Mitchell, who finished with nine points, made a clutch three point shot with 4:57 remaining to make it a six point game at 53-47.
Blake scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the second half.
West Chester shot 22-61 from the field, and 5-18 from behind the three point line. The Golden Rams held Chestnut Hill to 21-56 from the field, and 3-15 from beyond the arc.
Next up West Chester heads to Philadelphia University to take on the Rams, Saturday night at 7 p.m.
