WEST CHESTER, Pa. - Troy Hockaday scored a team-high 19 points and Carl Johnson added 14 as host West Chester knocked off visiting Shippensburg, 79-70, in a PSAC East men's basketball showdown inside Hollinger Field House Wednesday evening.
West Chester (18-6, 16-4 PSAC) won its fifth straight and eighth in its last nine outings while Shippensburg (7-17, 5-15) could not carry over its momentum from an impressive win over first-place East Stroudsburg last Saturday. The Golden Rams are now one game out of first place, behind the Warriors, thanks to Millersville's win over East Stroudsburg Wednesday. That sets up a battle for first place on Saturday afternoon inside Koehler Field House.
The Golden Rams did clinch a first round bye in the upcoming PSAC Tournament next month with the win tonight. West Chester stays three games ahead of Millersville with just two left to play.
Corey Blake (10 points, 10 rebounds) registered his second straight double-double and fith of the season in the win. West Chester has racked up an average margin of victory of 17.8 points during its most recent five-game win streak within the PSAC.
Eric Frans scored eight points and grabbed a team-best 12 rebounds while Jon Breeden finished with 11 points.
West Chester travels to East Stroudsburg on Saturday for a 3 p.m. rematch with the Warriors.
