WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester baseball swept a non-league doubleheader from visiting Saint Rose on Wednesday afternoon. Chris Pula’s two-run homer in the first game, led to a 4-3 win, while Jordan Wlodarczyk got things going with a two-run triple in the second that led to a 9-5 victory.
West Chester (4-4-1) reached the .500 mark for the first time this season with the sweep. The College of Saint Rose (2-12) saw its losing streak reach six games.
The first six batters in West Chester’s order went a combined 11-for-19 in the nightcap. Nick Bonadies was 3-for-3 with three RBI. Chris Pula went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one RBI. He was a combined 4-for-5 with four runs and three RBI in the doubleheader. Wlodarczyk went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
The Golden Rams plated four runs in the first and three more in the second to jump out to an early lead on the Golden Knights. Saint Rose answered back with two in the top of the second and one more in the third, but could never pull even. West Chester added two more in the bottom of the sixth, before Saint Rose made one last attempt at a comeback with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.
Conor Kerins (1-1) picked up the win in the nightcap. He started and pitched two innings, giving up two runs on two hits. He walked three and struck out two. Alec Schwartz, John Barr, Ron Scull, Matt McAllister and Nick Hinkson all threw an inning of relief.
Wlodarczyk’s two-run triple highlighted the hosts’ four-run first. Lamborn hit an RBI double, and Bonadies knocked in a run with a single up the middle. “Woody” finished off a four-RBI game with a two run single in the second, and Bonadies chased him home with a single as well.
Freshman Greg McCuch (1-0) picked up his first college win in the opener. He started and threw the first three innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out four. Head coach Jad Prachniak paraded four pitchers out to the mound to each throw one inning the rest of the way. Kyle Weary (1) earned the save, facing four batters in the seventh while walking one.
Pula hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning to put West Chester on top. Saint Rose answered with a pair of unearned runs in the top half of the second. However, Jack Provine delivered a two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded in the second to restore the Golden Rams’ lead, 4-2.
West Chester’s four relievers allowed just two hits the rest of the way, one of which was a solo shot to dead center field by Zac Bellinger in the fifth.
The Golden Rams scored four runs on six hits and made on error in the first game. The Golden Knights pushed three runs across on five hits and made an error as well. Saint Rose starter Chris Gould (1-3) suffered the loss. He pitched the first two innings, allowing four runs – two of which were earned – on four hits.
West Chester heads south to the Sunshine State for a non-league contest against Northwood on Friday at 2 p.m.
