West Chester Rides Gunkel To Win In Game 1; Ties Phila U In Nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Joe Gunkel (Hershey) pitched a complete-game, three-hitter to lead host West Chester to a 14-2 victory in the first game of a non-league doubleheader at Serpico Stadium Saturday afternoon. Philadelphia University plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh in the nightcap to tie the score, and the game was called due to darkness after nine innings.

West Chester (1-3-1) rapped out 12 hits in the opener in support of Gunkel’s pitching performance. Meanwhile, Philadelphia University (1-4-1) scored two runs on one hit in the top of the seventh of the nightcap that evened things up at 8-apiece. Neither side scored in the eighth or ninth innings, and the game was called due to darkness.

The second game of the doubleheader was scheduled to be a nine-inning affair. However, darkness prevented the teams from playing extra innings.

Mike Raimo went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored in game one while Jack Provine was 2-for-4 with three RBI of his own, including a two-run triple, to lead West Chester offensively. Kyle Frazier went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI as well. Jordan Wlodarczyk was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored.

Trailing 2-1, West Chester pushed across seven runs in the bottom of the fourth and six more in the fifth to blow the game open. The Golden Rams battered four PhilaU pitchers for 13 runs on 10 hits in those two frames alone. Raimo hit a two-run double in the fourth, and Provine later followed with a two-run triple to highlight the scoring. Frazier doubled down the left-field line in the fifth, and Justin Roman hit a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle.

Gunkel (1-1) allowed just one hit after allowing two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning. He was his usual self on the mound, after settling down. In the second game, Fred Breidenbach got the start and threw the first six innings. He allowed five earned runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out three. Greg McCuch came on in the seventh and faced two batters. Matt McAllister relieved him and finished up. However, the two inherited baserunners scored to tie the game at 8-8.

Raimo went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI, giving him five RBI in the doubleheader, and Chris Pula Rob Spekhardt and Wlodarczyk each had a pair of hits. West Chester scored eight runs on 11 hits in the nightcap.

The Golden Rams will be back in action on Sunday, March 10 for a non-league doubleheader against University of the Sciences at Serpico Stadium. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 noon.
