West Chester Women Upset Bloomsburg Tennis, 7-2

Box Score

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Brittany Counts knocked off Aida Diop, 6-1, 6-1, at first singles to clinch a PSAC women’s tennis match against rival Bloomsburg, 7-2, Friday afternoon on South Campus.

West Chester (9-6, 2-0 PSAC) made it a “Great Friday” on South Campus registering the program’s first win over Bloomsburg (1-6, 1-2) for the first time since the turn of the century and just the sixth time in 29 meetings between the two schools. The Golden Rams were 0-11 against the Huskies since the year 2000 entering Friday’s match.

The Golden Rams picked up wins at first and second doubles to carry a 2-1 lead into the singles competition. Alex Santoro and Ali Fetter were both straight-set winners at third singles and second singles, respectively, before Counts put the “W” in the books with her win at first singles.

“These wins (men’s match included), started with a message from (women’s team captain) Brittany Counts, who challenged both squads to rise to the occasion and beat Bloomsburg,” WCU head coach Tina Tharp said. “The two teams responded and showed up, not just to compete, but to beat Bloomsburg.

“I am very proud of these two teams.”

Jami Dumler recorded a win at fourth singles, and Nicole Nardi was a winner at sixth singles to finish up the match.

West Chester, which extended its current winning streak to five straight, hosts Kutztown on South Campus Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
