NEW CASTLE, Del. – Wilmington swept a non-league baseball doubleheader from visiting West Chester Tuesday afternoon, taking a pair of one-run decisions from the Golden Rams at Wilson Field. The Wildcats won the opener, 3-2, and then the nightcap, 9-8.
West Chester (18-18-1) is just 3-10 in its last 13 dating back to the end of last month. The Golden Rams dropped all three games to ninth-ranked Wilmington (32-12) this spring.
A pair of late inning runs, including a walking off single by Wilmington’s Joe El-Bisi in game two, allowed the Wildcats to sneak past West Chester. West Chester struck first in each game, but was unable to hang on down the stretch.
Trailing 2-0 after the second inning in game one, the Wildcats scored two runs in the fourth and the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth to earn the comeback victory to start the doubleheader. West Chester’s Tyler Coleman went 3-for-3 at the plate while Mike Raimo and Kyle Frazier each recorded a RBI with singles up the middle in the second to put WCU on top 2-0.
In the nightcap, West Chester scored one in the first and four in the second. However, Wilmington kept pace with two in the first and three in the second as the game was tied at 5-5 after two frames. Each side scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to enter the final inning tied at 8-apiece. The difference was El-Bisi’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh.
Jordan Wlodarczyk went 2-for-4 in the second game, while Raimo was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs. Justin Roman knocked in a pair of runs as well. Colemen was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a RBI.
West Chester hosts Millersville on Friday at Serpico Stadium in a critical PSAC East divisional matchup. First pitch of game one will be at 1 p.m.
