West Chester Baseball Tops Chestnut Hill In Final Non-League Matchup Of Season

Box Score

NORRISTOWN, Pa. – Tyler Coleman went 4-for-6 with a pair of runs scored and a pair of RBI to lead visiting West Chester to a 14-6 victory over host Chestnut Hill College at Latshaw-McCarthy Field in a non-league baseball contest Tuesday evening.

West Chester (19-22-1) ended an eight-game losing streak with the win over Chestnut Hill College (17-24).

The Golden Rams snapped out of a bit of a hitting slump by scoring 14 runs on 16 hits Tuesday night. Chestnut Hill made four errors while 10 Griffins pitchers combined to walk nine batters and throw five wild pitches. WCU broke open a 7-6 ballgame with three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and three more in the ninth. That answered a six-run fifth inning by the Griffins, which was the only frame in which the hosts scored.

Jordan Wlodarczyk got West Chester going early with a two-run single in the first while Coleman scored on a balk in the second that gave the guests a 3-0 lead after two.

The Rams pushed across four runs on four hits in the top of the fifth to take a 7-0 lead. Coleman and Rob Spekhardt each had RBI singles while Jack Provine scored on an error by the Griffins’ center-fielder and Justin Roman came home on a wild pitch.

Chestnut Hill plated six runs in the bottom of the fifth, eventually chasing starter Greg McCuch before he could retire a batter. Ron Scull (2-1) came on in relief and tossed three strong innings to get credit for the win. McCuch gave up all six runs, but only allowed two hits in four-plus innings of work. He walked two and hit three batters. Scull threw three scoreless innings of one-hit ball. He walked one and struck out four.

West Chester was able to answer Chestnut Hill’s six-spot with three of its own to extend a one-run lead to four. Wlodarczyk doubled in a run, and Coleman singled in another. The third run scored on a wild pitch. Chris Pula hit a RBI double in the seventh, and Justin Lamborn hit a RBI single in the ninth, before Roman singled in two runs later in the frame to close out the scoring.

John Barr and Alec Schwartz each tossed one inning in relief, following Scull to the hill. They each allowed one hit, but did not give up a run. Schwartz struck out two.

West Chester concludes its regular season with a four-game series against PSAC East rival Kutztown on Friday and Saturday. The Golden Rams will honor their six graduating seniors before Saturday’s doubleheader at 1 p.m. at Serpico Stadium on Senior Day.

West Chester is tied for fourth place in the Eastern Division of the PSAC with Shippensburg as the Rams fight for the fourth and final playoff spot in next week’s conference tournament.
