Box Score
WEST CHESTER Pa. – As the winds whipped across the South Campus Field, Mercyhurst used their technical skill to possess the ball and a quick strike attack netted a goal just before half and two shortly after intermission, as the veteran Lakers defeated the Golden Rams 3-1 in the PSAC opener for both teams Friday afternoon.
Cameron Scott scored for West Chester (0-2-1, 0-1-0 PSAC), on a header late in the second off a Wyatt Dungan free kick. Mercyhurst (2-1-0, 1-0-0 PSAC), controlled the play for much of the first half, finally capitalizing when Fernando Martinez placed one in the far corner past Golden Rams keeper Ryan Shultz on a shot just from just inside the box, in the 40
th minute.
Momentum from the Martinez goal seemed to carry over to the second half, Danny Deakins scored twice before the ten minute mark.
The Golden Rams appeared to score early in the contest, but Christian Benner (Tedford, Pa. / Souderton) was called for offside, after he put in a rebound off a Conor Malarney (West Chester, Pa. / Rustin) shot that hit the post in the 17
th minute.
West Chester once again thought they had scored when Roberto Silva (Kennett Square, Pa. / Kennett) hit the back of the net on a breakaway, only to have it called back when he was called for offside.
Ryan Shultz (Lancaster, Pa. / Manheim Twp.) recorded two saves in net for the Golden Rams, and Mikko Sarkkinen made four in for the Lakers.
The Golden Rams return to action at home tomorrow against Gannon at 2:30 PM.
