MILLERSVILLE, Pa. –
Rondell White rushed for 227 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 20/22 West Chester University to a 48-3 victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Millersville at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium on a rainy Saturday night.
West Chester (3-0, 1-0 PSAC) opens the year with three wins for the first time since 1996 while extending its winning streak over Millersville (0-3, 0-1) to 11 straight games.
One week after putting up 612 yards of total offense on Gannon, West Chester bested that effort with 624 yards against the Marauders Saturday. The Golden Rams outgained Millersville by a lopsided 624-121 margin, including a school-record 456 yards on the ground. That total was three yards more than the 453 yards rushing the Golden Rams laid on the Marauders in 2008 when former RB D’Andre Webb rushed for a single-game school record 306 yards and scored five TDs.
“With it raining as hard as it was, which was practically the whole game, we knew it was going to be a running game,” WCU head coach Bill Zwaan said. “(Rondell White) and Brandon Monk did a nice job of finding the seams and hitting the holes.
“And our offensive line up front did a really nice job as well. We needed those guys to have a big day, and they did. But, our wide receivers also did a nice job of blocking down field. They knew they were not going to have a lot of passes thrown their way with it raining as hard as it was. But, they still contributed in a big way.”
Brandon Monk rushed for a career-high 175 yards on 15 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns. Tight end
Tim Brown caught three passes for 89 yards and a score as well.
Adam Dempsey caught a touchdown pass for the second straight game. He finished the day with two catches for 19 yards. Quarterback
Sean McCartney was 9 of 13 for 168 yards and two TD tosses. He spent most of the night handing off to his running backs. West Chester ran the ball a school-record 63 times Saturday night.
Mike Labor led all West Chester players with seven tackles, including half of a sack. He also forced a fumble.
Blaise Schieler finished with six tackles, including four solo stops.
West Chester will return home next Saturday night at 6 p.m. to take on visiting Kutztown on Family Weekend. It is also “Coaches To Cure MD” night as well as “Unite For HER”. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to Farrell Stadium for Saturday’s tilt. “Pink Out” T-shirts will be sold all week long in Sykes Student Union on campus as well as at the football game that evening with proceeds going to help fight breast cancer. Parking will be at a premium around the stadium and on campus. Fans are encouraged to arrive early and expect delays.
