COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - West Chester University opened up its 2014 campaign with a 186.75-179.4 victory over non-league foe Ursinus Tuesday evening.
Freshman Majesta Valentine shined on the balance beam and the floor exercise. She posted a 9.6 on the beam while recording a 9.625 on the floor. She registered an all-around score of 37.050 in her first college meet. Valentine scored a 9.375 on the uneven bars and an 8.45 on the vault.
West Chester claimed the top spot in three of the four events, including the top four spots on the uneven bars and the top two spots on both the balance beam and vault. Valentine tied for first in the final event of the night - the floor exercise. The Golden Rams then claimed spots three, four and five in showing much more depth.
Lindsay Knapp recorded a team-best 9.625 on the beam and authored a 9.375 on the floor for West Chester. She won the beam with Valentine placing second. Senior Paige Griffin scored a 9.475 on the floor and a 9.375 on the bars. Melissa Prisco notched a 9.475 on the vault and a 9.325 on the beam. Prisco won the vault while freshman Selena Swanger was runner-up with a 9.425.
Emily Siegel won the uneven bars with a score of 9.625. The Golden Rams dominated this event with Meghan Brannon placing second (9.55), Valentine third and Griffin fourth.
West Chester returns home next weekend to host SUNY-Cortland and Rhode Island College inside Sturzebecker HSC at 4 p.m. It will serve as the Golden Rams home opener and one of three home events for the 2014 campaign.
