WEST CHESTER, Pa. – West Chester University set a new school record on the balance beam en route to a pair of victories over visiting SUNY Cortland and Rhode Island College Saturday afternoon at Sturzebecker HSC.
Â
West Chester (3-0) scored a 189.475 while SUNY Cortland posted a 185.150 and Rhode Island College a 169.350. The Golden Rams' team score of 47.925 on the beam broke the school's old mark of 47.700.
Â
"I was a little worried about the beam after a shaky start in our first meet of the season," sixth-year head coach Barb Cordova said. "But, there were zero counting falls. It was just a solid effort all the way around."
Â
Freshman Majesta Valentine won the beam with a 9.775 while teammate Cecelia Lorenzen placed second with a 9.575. All five of West Chester's scoring gymnasts posted a mark better than 9.5. Valentine also won the floor exercise with a score of 9.825 as the Golden Rams took first place in three of the four events. Valentine notched an all-around score of 37.425.
Â
Emily Siegel won the uneven bars, followed by teammates Paige Griffin and Meghan Brannon. Siegel registered a score of 9.675 while Griffin and Brannon each recorded a 9.475.
Â
"This was a whole team effort today," Cordova continued. "We made a few minor mistakes on the bars. So, we needed to do well in the other events, and I think we did that."
Â
SUNY Cortland's Meghan Goyden won the vault. However, West Chester took second, third, fourth and fifth to display superior depth. Melissa Prisco scored a 9.5 while Selena Swanger and Valentine each scored a 9.475.
Â
West Chester travels to Towson University next Saturday for a quad meet with the host Tigers and Centenary College (La.) and Southern Connecticut State.
