TENAFLY, N.J. - Connor Dunn and Andrew Peterson combined for a win in doubles, and both won singles matches, to lead West Chester University's men's tennis to a 5-4 victory over host St. Thomas Aquinas College inside the Tenafly Racquet Club Saturday night.
West Chester moves to 3-2 on the season, in winning its inaugural match of the spring.
Dunn and Peterson teamed up for an 8-3 triumph in second doubles, and
Jared Howat and
Cody Leimback started 2014 with an 8-4 victory at no. 1 doubles.
Chaz Irwin and
Pat McGinley lost a hard fought 8-6 match as the third doubles team, leaving
West Chester with a 2-1 lead going into the six singles matches.
Peterson secured the first singles victory for the visitors with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph in fifth singles. Dunn playing second singles, in what coach Tina Tharp called "the pivotal match of the night," pulled out a 7-5 win in the first set, then finished off his opponent with a 6-2 second set victory, to give the Golden Rams a 4-1 lead in the match.
Jared Howat dropped a tight first set 7-5 in first singles, and fell in straight sets 6-1 in the second set, to bring the Spartans to within two at 4-2.
Needing one more win to secure victory, Pat McGinley ended the suspense with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph in fourth singles.
The two schools are scheduled for a rematch in West Chester on the South Campus Courts on March 12 at 2 p.m.
