COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Va. - Matt Petrizzi went 2-for-5 with a double and a home run, and Justin Roman was 4-for-4 at the plate, as West Chester University concluded its weekend at the Division II Spring Tournament with an 11-5 victory over College of Saint Rose Sunday afternoon.
West Chester (2-1) won two of three in Virginia to open the 2014 campaign.
The Golden Rams scored five runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to break a 3-3 tie. Saint Rose picked up a pair of runs in the eighth, but it was not enough to overome the Golden Rams.
Joe Gutowski (1-0) earned a win in his first start for West Chester. The junior college transfer started and lasted six innings, yielding three runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked two. Kyle Weary came on in relief and threw two innings, surrendering two runs while striking out three and walking four. Petrizzi finished up by throwing the eighth and retiring Saint Rose in order.
West Chester is tentatively schedule for a home opener on Thursday, Feb. 27 against Chestnut Hill. Field conditions will be evaluated this week before a decision is made about that non-league tilt.
