Box Score 2 WEST CHESTER, Pa. –
Tyler Coleman's RBI single in the fifth inning of game one broke a 3-3 tie and led West Chester to victory and a doubleheader split with PSAC East rival East Stroudsburg Tuesday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.
The Golden Rams (11-7, 4-4 PSAC East) captured the opener 4-3, and the Warriors (17-8, 3-5 PSAC East) gained the split with a 3-1 triumph in the second game of the twin bill.
West Chester grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third inning of the opener on a RBI bases loaded walk to
Chris Pula, which was then followed by a two run single to center off the bat of
Justin Roman.
Starter
Joe Gutowski carried the 3-0 lead into the top of the fifth when he ran into trouble and left with the score at 3-2 with runners on second and third and one out.
Kyle Weary came on in relief and induced a ground ball, but a run scored to tie the game at 3-3. After an infield single loaded the bases, Weary got out of the jam when Ian Allen hit a fly ball to left that was caught by Coleman, who threw home to nail the runner at the plate to keep the game tied at 3-3.
Matt Petrizzi led off the bottom of the fifth with a single to left, Pula was hit by a pitch, and Roman singled to left to load the bases. Coleman delivered the game winning hit on a single to left to score Petrizzi.
Weary finished off the game with two scoreless inning to improve to 2-0 on the season. Gutowski received a no-decision pitching 4.1 giving up three runs, two earned, on seven hits while walking two and striking out three. Warrior's starter Matt Smith suffered the loss going four innings plus three batters in the fifth allowing four runs on seven hits, he walked one struck out five and hit three batters.
In the nightcap, both pitchers threw well, but two unearned runs cost West Chester in the 3-1 defeat.
The Warriors grabbed the lead in the third on a RBI single to center off of the Golden Rams starter
Nick Stallings then added an unearned run in the fifth to make it a 2-0 lead.
Kyle Frazier singled home
Robert Knox, who walked and stole second, to make it a 2-1 game in the bottom of the fifth. Pinch runner
Mike Gannon went to second on a wild pitch, but
Mike Raimo lined out to left to end the inning.
East Stroudsburg added an unearned run in the seventh to make it a 3-1 final.
Stallings was the tough luck loser going 6.1 allowing only one earned run on five hits with two walks and two strike outs. Brandon Holup went the distance for the Warriors, to improve his record to 3-1, giving up just the one run on four hits and one walk while recording five strike outs.
West Chester is back at Serpico Stadium tomorrow afternoon when Bloomsburg comes to town for a 1 p.m. first pitch. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, and has been moved three times due to the weather. The Huskies swept the first twin bill on March 27, by scores of 10-2 and 5-1.
