Baseball Sweeps Lock Haven

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Ryan Swearingen tossed 6.1 innings of no-hit ball, and John Barr picked up his first win in over two years, as visiting West Chester University swept a PSAC East doubleheader from Lock Haven at Foundation Field Sunday afternoon.

West Chester (18-11, 11-7 PSAC East) swept its second doubleheader from Lock Haven (11-18, 3-13) in as many days to take the season series, 4 games to 0.

Swearingen (1-1) tossed a complete-game, yielding a one-out single to Scott Zuback in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Bald Eagles' lone hit in game one, registering his first win on the year. Swearingen faced just one batter over the minimum while walking one and striking out two.

Tyler Coleman hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Mike Raimo, and Chris Pula singled up the middle to plate Justin Roman, putting West Chester in the lead 2-0 after the first inning. From there, Lock Haven pitcher Jacob Belinda (2-3) settled down. However, Swearingen was just too much for the Eagles' hitters. Belinda surrendered three runs on eight hits and walked two batters.

The Golden Rams managed just a run-scoring single by Rob Spekhardt in the sixth inning against Belinda the rest of the way. But, it was enough on a day that Swearingen would not be beat.

Raimo and Pula each went 2-for-3 in the opener. Roman, Spekhardt, Rob Knox and Luke Mogle had West Chester's other hits.

In the nightcap, senior left-hander, John Barr (1-0) pitched six strong innings, scattering four hits and allowing just one unearned run, leading West Chester to a 9-1 win. The Golden Rams handed Barr a 7-0 lead when he took the mound in the bottom of the first. But, the senior didn't give Lock Haven an inch.

The win was the first for Barr in more than two years, dating back to March 20, 2012, and just the second of his career against a conference opponent. He beat Mansfield in the last game of the regular season his freshman year.

West Chester sent 13 batters to the plate and Lock Haven went through three pitchers in that fateful first inning. Eagles' starter Parker Watson (2-3) walked three batters and hit another, retiring just one Rams' batter, before exiting. All four Golden Rams would eventually score. When the dust had settled, WCU scored seven runs on just three hits and left the bases loaded.

Spekhardt and Raimo each collected a pair of hits in the second game. Six different players registered a RBI.

West Chester travels to East Stroudsburg on Monday for its third conference doubleheader in as many days. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
