Box Score 2 EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – West Chester plated eight runs in the top of the eighth inning of game two to salvage a split of its PSAC baseball doubleheader against East Stroudsburg Monday afternoon at Mitterling Field.
West Chester (19-12, 12-8 PSAC East) remains alive in the hunt for a playoff spot in the PSAC Tournament coming up early next month. The Golden Rams split the season series at two games apiece with East Stroudsburg (25-12, 11-9). The Warriors claimed game one, 7-4, before the Rams rallied for an 11-4 victory in the nightcap.
All eight runs in the eighth inning of game two came with two outs. Luke Mogle started the rally with a run-scoring single that scored Mike Gannon, who had reached on a fielder's choice. Mogle moved up to second on a throwing error. After Mike Raimo was intentionally walked, Justin Roman singled home Mogle. That chased reliever Ben Bortz (3-1), who suffered his first loss of the season in the aftermath.
Max Mueller came on for ESU, but threw a wild pitch that moved up Raimo and Roman. Petrizzi then singled home Raimo. Tyler Coleman followed with a two-run triple, and Chris Pula hit a ground-rule double. Pula moved up on a wild pitch, and Rob Knox walked. Knox stole second, before Rob Spekhardt singled home Pula and Knox. That was all for Mueller. Colin Taylor came on and got the Warriors out of the inning.
Raimo finished game two 3-for-4 with three runs scored. He led off the game with a home run. Spekhardt was 3-for-4 as well with three RBI. Eight of West Chester's batters recorded a hit in the win and four had multiple hits.
Petrizzi (2-0) went the distance on the hill for West Chester, yielding four runs on 11 hits. He walked two and struck out a season-high 10, which is the most in a single game by a Golden Rams hurler this season. Petrizzi's RBI ground out in the fifth tied the contest at 3-3.
West Chester scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning of game one to pull within striking distance of East Stroudsburg at 5-4. However, the Warriors answered with three runs in their half of the frame to put the game out of reach.
Andrew Gernert (1-1) suffered the loss in game one. He started and lasted five innings, giving up five runs, four of them earned, on nine hits. He walked five and struck out two. Kyle Weary came on and allowed three unearned runs on one hit. He walked two.
Pula and Petrizzi each finished 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Roman was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
West Chester will travel to Philadelphia University Thursday for a non-league contest, before playing a four-game series with Shippensburg this weekend.
