Cassidy Branigan PSAC East Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week



LOCK HAVEN, Pa- West Chester University sophomore Cassidy Branigan has been chosen as the PSAC  East Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.

So. Cassidy Branigan (Lansdowne, Pa. / Commonwealth Connections) went a combined 6-0 in PSAC play last week, including a season turning three set victory at Kutztown on Wednesday to propel the Golden Rams to a second place finish in the East.

On Wednesday, Branigan posted her biggest win of the year when she battled back from a 4-6 loss in the opening set at third singles to take the next two, 6-4, 6-1, and clinch the match for the Golden Rams. Branigan, who teamed with Stephanie Cifarelli to win at third doubles, collected two wins in West Chester's 7-2 victory.

The sophomore picked up a pair of victories to lead West Chester to a 7-2 victory over PSAC East rival Millersville on a sunny Thursday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts. Branigan teamed with Cifarelli to score an 8-5 win in third doubles, then was the first to put a point on the board for West Chester when she dispatched her opponent 6-4, 6-1 at third singles.

Branigan continued her perfect week with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in singles on Saturday in the regular season finale against Shippensburg. The third doubles was a walkover victory with the Raiders only having five players.

West Chester defeated Kutztown in the quarterfinal round of the PSAC tournament on Monday, with Branigan winning twice to bring her personal winning streak to five consecutive in singles and improve to 8-7 on the year.

The Golden Rams hosts the PSAC semifinals and finals on Thursday and Friday. West Chester faces the top seed California, Pa. in the semifinals on Thursday afternoon following the Men's matches that begin at 12 p.m.
