West Chester Drops Two at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Millersville scored a pair of one run victories, 8-7 in eight inning and 3-2, over West Chester to stay on top in the PSAC East Friday afternoon at Cooper Park.

The Golden Rams (23-16, 15-11 PSAC East), who hold the third spot and have clinched a playoff spot never led on the day and fell behind in the bottom of the first in both contests. The Marauders (33-12, 20-6 PSAC East) hold a one game advantage over Shippensburg for the top spot in the East.

Millersville jumped on West Chester's starting pitcher Matt McAllister for a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead, then added two in the second and one in the third to carry a 6-0 lead to the top of the fourth, but West Chester responded with a six run fourth to tie the game at 6-6.  

Tyler Coleman got the rally started with a leadoff single and went to third on a Chris Pula single a fielder's choice by Robert Knox brought home the first Golden Rams run. A pair of bunt singles from Rob Spekhardt and Luke Mogle loaded the bases and a wild pitch sent Knox to the plate to make a 6-2 game. Kyle Frazier singled to right to bring in a run, then after a Mike Raimo walk to load the bases, Justin Roman made it a two run game with a RBI single and Matt Pertizzi doubled to bring home two and tie the game at 6-6, but West Chester could not push the lead run across.

The Marauders regained the lead on a two out single and an error in right field that let the runner score all the way from first in the bottom of the inning.
West Chester would tie the game in the fifth after Robert Knox singled to open the inning and scored on an error to make it a 7-7 contest, and the game would stay that way with Adam Zipko and Kyle Weary putting up 0's until the bottom of the eighth.

Weary hit Dan Johnson with one out, the Marauders followed with a pair of singles to load the bases and walked off on a fielder's choice.

Zipko picked up the win to improve to 5-0, going the final three innings without allowing a run, he entered with two on and no one out in the six and retired the final eight batters he faced only issuing a free pass to load the bases. Weary replaced McAllister in the fifth and was saddled with the loss allowing just his second earned run of the season to fall to 4-3. McAllister gave up 14 hits in 4.1 innings of work allowing seven runs three of which were earned. 

Jimmy McDade outdueled Fred Breidenbach in the in nightcap with both hurlers going six innings in the 3-2 Marauder victory.

McDade exited after a single from Mike Gannon to start the seventh, bringing on Zipko. A ground out moved Gannon to second and with two outs Roman walked, but Petrizzi grounded back to Zipko who threw to first to pick up his eighth save and end the game.

The Marauders scored on a leadoff triple and a single in the bottom of the first, then added a run in the second to make it a 2-0 advantage.Chris Pula tripled to open the fourth and scored on a Knox groundout to make a 2-1 game, but the Marauders regained a two run advantage with a run in the bottom of the inning.

The Golden Rams again made a one run game in the fifth when Raimo walked, stole second and went to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch for the final run and make it a 3-2 final.

Breidenbach, who took the loss to fall to 3-5, went 6 innings allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out two. McDade is now 6-1 after allowing two runs on eight hits over his six plus innings of work.

West Chester hosts Millersville tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the backend of the series and the final regular season games of the season on senior day.
